MPSA Announces Next American Journal of Political Science Editorial Team

Kathleen Dolan and Jennifer L. Lawless will serve as AJPS Co-Editors

BLOOMINGTON, IN, January 30, 2019 – The Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) is pleased to announce that Kathleen Dolan of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and Jennifer L. Lawless of the University of Virginia have been appointed to serve as the next co-Editors of its flagship journal, the American Journal of Political Science American Journal of Political Science (AJPS). The new editorial team, led by Dolan and Lawless, will serve a four-year team beginning in June 2019.

Kathleen Dolan is Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Dolan’s research focuses on electoral behavior, women and politics, public opinion, political participation, legislative politics, and survey methodology. She is the author of two books, When Does Gender Matter? Women Candidates and Gender Stereotypes in American Elections and Voting for Women: How the Public Evaluates Women Candidates. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and has appeared in a multitude of academic journals. Dolan earned a Ph.D. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland.

Jennifer L. Lawless is Commonwealth Professor of Politics in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics at the University of Virginia. Lawless’ research focuses on political ambition, campaigns and elections, and media and politics. She is the author or co-author of six books, including Women on the Run: Gender, Media, and Political Campaigns in a Polarized Era (with Danny Hayes) and It Still Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don’t Run for Office (with Richard L. Fox). Her research has also been supported by the National Science Foundation, has appeared in numerous academic journals, and is regularly cited in the popular press.

Lawless is currently an associate editor on the interim AJPS editorial team and holds an appointment as a non- resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. She earned a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University.
Dolan and Lawless will be joined by four Associate Editors including Elizabeth Cohen of Syracuse University, Rose McDermott of Brown University, Graeme Robertson of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Jonathan Woon at the University of Pittsburgh.

The MPSA Executive Council unanimously accepted the AJPS Editorial Team Search Committee’s recommendation to appoint Dolan and Lawless as co-Editors. “We believe that the incoming AJPS editorial team led by Dolan and Lawless will maintain the journal’s tradition of making outstanding contributions to scholarly knowledge while continuing to expand transparency in both published work and the operation of the journal,” said MPSA President Elisabeth Gerber of the University of Michigan.

“The Dolan and Lawless proposal hit all of the criteria proposed by the MPSA Executive Council. The committee feels confident that this team with be excellent stewards for AJPS.” stated Rick Wilson, chair of the AJPS Editorial Team Search Committee, in the committee’s recommendation to the MPSA Executive Committee.

The AJPS Editorial Team Search Committee, chaired by Rick Wilson of Rice University, was composed of Kathy Cramer of the University of Wisconsin, John Ishiyama of North Texas University, Sara Mitchell of the University of Iowa, and Tasha Philpot of the University of Texas.

The editorial team designees will succeed the interim AJPS editorial team led by Jan Leighley of American University and a team of five Associate Editors: Sarah M. Brooks of Ohio State University, Mary G. Dietz of Northwestern University, Jennifer L. Lawless of the University of Virginia, Layna Mosley of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Rocio Titiunik of the University of Michigan.
